Painting landscapes as a subject, not as a background, seems to have arisen around 1500.

What is modern art? This is a matter of definition. I would say the Post-Impressionism

of Seurat, Gauguin and van Gogh. They all painted landscapes, although not very frequently.

After them came the fauvists with lots of landscapes.
