At the end of World War II, Berlin (as well as the rest of the Germany) was split into four separate parts. Each part was under the control of the military of one of the four countries that won the war- the US, the UK, France and the USSR.
In 1949, as the Cold War was starting between the USSR and the other three countries, the American, British and French parts were joined together to become West Berlin (and West Germany for the rest of the country). The Soviet part of Berlin became East Berlin (and the Soviet part of Germany became East Germany).
