Catch A Falling Star, written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss, and recorded by Perry Como, was the first ever record certified by the Recording Industry Association of American (RIAA) as selling over a million copies, and therefore the very first Gold Record was presented to Perry on 5th March, 1958.

Note that there were many records that sold over a million copies, even dating back to the 1920s, but Catch A Falling Star was the first 'Certified' Gold.

I believe the answer to that would be Elvis Presley. Not only is he considered the most popular and best selling rock & roll artist of all time, but he had a string of big hits in the 50's, 60's, and 70's on the pop charts, country charts, gospel charts, R&B charts, and album charts. Plus, at that time it was much more common for artists to release 2 or 3 singles at the same time, and since it was common Elvis to have "double-sided" hits in which both the A-side and B-side would hit the charts, he would easily end up with 5 or 6 bestselling hits all at the same time.

Many consider The Beatles the greatest band of all time. Surprisingly, the band didn't win too many awards for their work, but they did win a grammy for album of the year with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and had quite a few other nominations. The band had a total of 27 #1 hits. What's really impressive is how they accomplished all of what they did in only about 7 years.
