Gcina Mhlophe wrote the play "Have You Seen Zandile?" to highlight and bring awareness to the issue of missing people and children in South Africa. The play aims to shed light on the emotional impact and struggles faced by families of missing individuals, while also advocating for their safe return. Through storytelling and drama, Mhlophe hopes to evoke empathy and understanding towards this social issue.
Zandile is a young girl, one day coming home from school she makes an imaginary friend named Bongi, who lives where she does and has the same shoes as her. Zandile's grandmother (Gogo) then explains how Zandile's father (Tom) has many children and how her mother lives in the Transkei. Gogo says she is very clever. Gogo tells Zandile stories and Zandile gives Gogo purpose. There's a scene or two that just tell us about there relationship. Then one day Zandile is taken away in a white van Gogo finds out and reports it. Zandile writes letters in the sand to Gogo hoping the birds will tell her. We are then told of zandiles mother (lulama) ,she stole Zandile and doesn't allow Zandile to talk to or say anything to Gogo, she beats Zandile and forces her to work. Zandile and her friend (lindi) swim in a river and talk about "changes in girls" but thinking that snakes bite then that's why they bleed. Lulama then tells us that she was going to be a famous singer but then was pregnant with Zandile. lindi tells zandile that she is going to Johannesburg for a wedding ,Zandile asks if lindi could try find Gogo meanwhile lulama is arranging her marriage with a wealthy boy in the village. Zandile is asked ,by her school, to recite a praise poem to one of the teachers but indirectly (from the writers perspective not Zandiles) its meant for Gogo. In that scene Gogo is seen on stage packing a suite case. Lindi returns and tell Zandile about her new boy friend, Zandile knows him and he knows Gogo, she then finds the address of Gogos friend. The friend then gives Zandile the suite case Gogo packed... Gogo passed away... This story is the authors biography but made into a play. The authors name in Gcina Mhlophe.
