New England colonies didn't have many farms, so they couldn't
grow much, although they did grow molasses. In the middle colonies,
they grew wheat, rye, oats, and even occasionally tobacco. This is
because the Middle Colonies had more fertile soil than the New
Both the Middle and Southern colony farms were fertile in soil
but the Southern colonies grew indigo and the Middle more
grains. They probably both grew both of these crops but one more
than the other.Lastly, the Southern colonies had more slaves.
The role slaves played in the middle colonies is that Slaves
worked in cities as skilled laborers such as blacksmiths and
carpenters. Other slaves worked on farms, on board ships and
growing ships building industries.
