Like in all of the Roman Empire, there were the Roman Conquerors and the native conquered. The Romans built a good road system for their ox carts which the British think is adequate for modern vehicles. The common people lived in unheated cottages which they have slightly expanded. It is still against the law to heat them.

The period after the Romans left is known as the Dark Ages because they took all their technology with them and the people who were left were unable to replace it with their own inventions. The standard of living deteriorated rapidly and didn't really improve until the arrival of the Normans 600 years later.

Before the Roman invasion, Britain was made up of several tribes which seemed to aways be at war with each other. The Romans brought unity and civilization to Britain. Although archaeologists are finding information about pre-Roman Britain and have collected a lot already, there is still much more to learn about the ancient Britons.
