When we think of the ships that first came to the New World we don't realize that they were very small. The Santa Maria, along with her two sister ships, Nina and Pinta, were only about 40 feet in length. This is no bigger than lifeboats on most large vessels. I would say it was very crowded and confined as most space on the ship was used for storing supplies. Columbus knew how far India had to be from Spain going westward based on the length that was known eastward.
