There is no line from The Raven on Poe's grave stone. There is no statement at all about him. Ironically, Poe's birth date was erroneously carved as January 20, 1809 instead of January 19, 1809.

Actually, there was no quote on the original gravestone ordered by Poe's cousin Neilson Poe that was destroyed before being placed at the original grave site, and the only engraving on the temporary replacement was 'No. 80' until late 1875. In 1875, the grave site and grave stone were both replaced. The replacement grave site, located near the burial ground's street entrance is the one with the erroneous birth date along with Poe's name and date of death, but the original grave site, near the back, currently has the line "Quoth the Raven 'Nevermore'" engraved on the gravestone.

Information On Poe's New Tombstone

Poe's full name in capital letters on the base.

Each side of the monument carries a different inscription:

North side: Maria Poe Clemm

Born: March 17, 1790

Died: February 16, 1871

South side: Virginia Clemm Poe

Born: August 15, 1822

Died: January 30, 1847

West side: Edgar Allan Poe

Born: January 20*,1809

Died: October 7, 1849

* The engraved date is incorrect. Poe was born on January 19th.

Poe's original gravesite has a memorial as well that reads:

"Quoth the Raven Nevermore.

Original burial place of Edgar Allan Poe

from October 9, 1849 until November 17. 1875.

Mrs. Maria Clemm, his mother-in-law, lies upon his right

and Virginia Poe, his wife, upon his left.

Under the monument erected to him in this cemetery."

And there is an engraving of a raven at the top.

Actually, people leave coins on Poe's current gravesite from time to time, but you probably want to know what is left by the Poe Toaster at Poe's original gravesite (the one with the raven). The Poe Toaster left 3 blood red roses and a partially empty bottle of cognac every year in the early morning hours of January 19 (Poe's birthday) until 2009.
