Officially, Mexico became part of the Spanish territories. As such, it had almost the same government and politics found in Spain (it was an absolute monarchy). The main difference was the treatment given to the Native American peoples: most of them were part of an Encomienda system which is a fancy name for slavery. Also, most privileges and higher posts in the New Spain society were given to the Peninsulares, or people born in Spain.
