Actually, the camera obscura WAS used by artists to assist in painting before the advent of Photography. The artists would sit in a darkened room with a pinhole in one side. The image (rendered upside down) projected on the wall was used by the painters, rather than looking at the scene itself.
Seriously? You've gotta be kidding! Common sense, man! When the camera was invented photography came about. They went hand in hand.
Photography was simply a new way of painting something. In the old era of Shakespear and Davinci, they would have to paint anything that they would want a picture of. Photography was the solution to saving time, and capturing an image much clearer than painting ever could, as it can take the image of the person directly into the photograph.
There were a lot more drawings and people had to rely on their memory a lot more.
There were more pictures because people wanted to capture their memories too. So the rich hired profesional artists to sketch out important moments.
It wasn't invented, it evolved from a pencil.
