Life was tough for Irishmen in the 1800s. They couldn't get work and if they did it was at the lowest point on the work scale. They were beaten and cheated, living in terrible conditions. They persevered and like the Italians and Germans after them gradually rose to become leaders of our country.

it was HORRIBLE. They were called, all over the US, the Gaelic Menace. People didn't like them mostly because of their religion (Catholicism) (America has a problem with Catholics (only Catholic President was JFK)). When Joseph Barker was elected as mayor of Pgh in 1850 (while in prison) he swore he would get rid of the menace. They often had the jobs that the slaves would normally get. If you have studied anything about the slaves, you know it was pure hell.

Why did Irish immigrants want slavery?

Most Irish people did not want slavery. The Irish culture teaches a respect for all human beings. Some Irish immigrants fought for the south with the agreement that their entire family could become citizens if one man of the family joined the Confederate Army. (New York and Baltimore did the same to attract Irish immigrants and fill draft quotas). Some Irish immigrants (like some of many other cultures) were attracted to the slave-keeper mentality because of profit motivations or because they wanted to dominate others the way that England had dominated Ireland for centuries. But keep in mind that most Irish immigrants (and most immigrants from other poor lands) did not want slavery.
