It was pretty terrible in states like Georgia that were occupied by federal troops and run by carpetbaggers, scalaways and the lowest class ex-slaves.
Taxes were raised, slaves to work the fields were gone and plantation owners could not raise crops to make money, so they lost their farms. The only ones who did well were the poor whites who helped the Yankees. White women were raped and juries were made up of ex-slaves and low-life whites. Read the novel, Gone with the Wind to get an idea.
What would it be like to live in the south as a freedman during Reconstruction?
Scalawags were southerners who helped during Reconstruction and carpetbaggers were northerners who went south to help with Reconstruction. a helpful hint to remember which is which is to remember that scalawags and southerners both start with 's'.
Southerners who saw an advantage to backing the Reconstruction of the South represented the majority of Southern Republicans. Much like the northerners who were against the Civil War (Copperheads), these southerners earned a derisive nickname. They were called "Scalawags".
They were both associated with the South after the Civil War, during the period known as "Reconstruction". After the South lost the war, the Republican Party dominated politics in the US during Reconstruction; the Democratic Party was largely associated with the South at the time (the parties have changed dramatically in the decades since the war ended), so it had thoroughly lost power."Scalawags" were Southerners who were Republicans; since most Southerners were Democrats at the time, this was seen as almost traitorous- ironic considering the South had just fought a war against the rest of the US. "Carpetbaggers" were mostly Republicans from the North who moved to the South after the war and got involved in politics there. Both terms were used mainly by Southerners against people they didn't like, and both were considered pejoratives. Another similar term is Copperhead- this referred to Northerners who were Democrats- as stated, the Democratic Party was associated with the South, so Northern Democrats were practically considered traitors.

The Reconstruction period started in 1865 after the American Civil War and lasted until 1877. Many southerners did not like Reconstruction.

The African Americans supported Lincoln's plan because they were treated like humans. They did not want to be treated like the southerners treated them. For example they treated them like nothing. The southerners were amazed at how well they were treated. They did not want them to be treated this way. They did not want these slaves being able to vote. They wanted the Africans to suffer.
The Southerners resented both scalawags and carpetbaggers during the Reconstruction Era because they were only out to make a fast buck. Many of them were swindlers and cheats trying to get something for nothing.
The south was still the poorest section of the U.S. so it must have been hard on them.
Robber barrons are not the same as carpetbaggers. Robber barrons is another name for captains of industry, these were leaders like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. They ran businesses during the Guilded Age. Carpet baggers are notherners who traveled south during reconstruction to take part in politics in the south. They were not recieved very well by southerners who were experiencing backlash from the Civil War.
They were hated in both the north and the south. They were still not allowed to own businesses or travel without a permit. They mostly became tenant farmers because they had no money to do anything else.
