After New York became a colony, the people began to make it one of the most prosperous colonies in America. But, New York was not just known as a big place for business. The region also contained a land of fertile river valleys, forested hills, tall mountains, and lakes. About a third of all of the battles of the Revolutionary War were fought in New York. New York would later become the first capital of the United States under the Constitution.

George Washington took the oath of office there as the nation's first President.

In the early 1800's the state of New York began its great era of canal and railroad building. By 1810, it had become the most populated state in the nation. By 1850, New York was the manufacturing state.

Some historians believe New York's nickname, "The Empire State," came from a remark made by George Washington. When Washington visited New York in 1783, he predicted that it might become, "the seat of a new empire."
