Boston in 1948 was like many big cities: the economy was doing well, and many of the men who had been overseas were now marrying and beginning to have kids. In fact, people were moving to the suburbs and buying their first home. There were new department stores, new schools, and new radio stations (AM radio still ruled). There were also plans to build new roads to make travel in and out of the city easier. One big thing that happened to Boston in 1948 was the arrival of television in June of that year, when WBZ-TV made its debut. It seemed almost everyone in Boston in 1948 was excited about Baseball. The American League Boston Red Sox finished tied for first at the end of the season. Unfortunately, they lost a one-game playoff to the Cleveland Indians. But there was still hope because the National League Boston Braves finished first, and they went to the World's Series. But once again, Boston fans were disappointed, because the Braves lost to Cleveland.
