The only war KNOWN for "Trenches" was WW1; however, at one time or another, nearly every 20th century foot soldier ended up spending "some" time in a muddy trench. With the exceptions of the Battle at Khe Sanh, and some Firebases such as "Mary Ann" or "Ripcord", the Vietnam War was fairly mobile. That is to say, never staying in one place for very long. The Firebases, such as LZ Action, LZ Blackhawk, Mary Ann, Ripcord, English, Bastogne, Rifle, Carol, Fort Defiance, etc. were mostly BUNKERS built partially underground, then heavily sand-bagged.
Yes. Nearly all 19th and 20th century wars utilized trenches. Its just that the Great War (WWI) just so happen to use them the most and consequently became the famous for using them. A two man foxhole could be considered a trench. If occupied long enough, say for months...it would become a 3 to 4 man trench...just living in those things make them larger, due to constant digging.

Life in trenches was horrible. There weren't clean places to sleep in or decent shelters and food. If they didn't have food they usually burned rats to eat them, soldiers were subjects to several diseases due to the water (in which they secreted feces and urine) floating around and the filthy smell of it. Their dead comrades were lying nearby without proper burial.

Some thought the war was 'unjust.' Some believed the North Vietnamese propaganda that the U.S. was the aggressor in the conflict. Some simply didn't want to put their life on the line in the military at war.
