He was a very powerful angel. Ezekiel 28:12-19 refers to the "King of Tyre" and is a prophetic dirge that by it's contents, strongly indicates a parallel with the Devil. The dirge identifies the devil as once being a beautiful Cherub (an especially powerful angel) but that haughtiness and unrighteousness developed in him.
