Best Answer

Official mail, such as dispatches from the emperor or some other official went smoothly, due to the good roads, horse changing stations and right-of-way granted imperial couriers. For the rest of the people it was hit or miss. If you had a friend who was traveling to the area where the recipient of your letter lived, you asked him to deliver it. He would be glad to do it because favors were always returned among the Romans. If not, you sent one of your slaves as a deliveryman. In other words, private mail was handled by private means.
