It was a plan to send economic support to the European countries after World War 2. America was afraid that these countries would become communistic. It seems weird now to think so but when your country is completely destroyed a state in wich everything is shared doesn't seem so wrong. With the economic support most countries joined America.
Another reason was that America would now have a European market to sell their products.
