There is a definition of McCarthyism - making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. It can also mean using unfair investigative techniques in order to restrict political criticism. McCarthy made a speech in 1950 stating that he was aware that there was over 200 members of the Communist Party who worked for the US Department of State. There was massive media response. A committee was formed to hear evidence, but McCarthy could not show and evidence to support his accusations. However, he continued to exploit the fear of Communism until his death in May 1958 age 48
