George Brinton McClellan
Union General George B. McClellan was an excellent strategist. His plan to not attack Richmond from the north was a 100 mile march. By seeking to land on one of Virginia's peninsulas, his army would be only 60 miles from Richmond. His operation was known as the Peninsula campaign. It was a sophisticated plan.

He trained the Army of the Potomac.
The operation George McClellan is most noted for is the Peninsular Campaign of 1862. It was designed to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia, but it failed due to his greatly over estimating the strength of Robert E. Lee's army after a series of battles known as the Seven Days. He grew fearful that his Army of the Potomac would be destroyed by Lee, even though the Federals had held there own against the rebels. He withdrew and evacuated his army with the final units leaving Virginia August 26, 1862.Peninsula campaign
"Little Mac"
The idea of Union General George B. McClellan to use a land-sea operation to attack Richmond was a brilliant operation. In the beginning of the conflict between Confederate General Robert E. Lee and General McClellan, McClellan took too much time for his operation to fully develop. One issue that caused a delay for Union forces was the Union's decision to lay siege to Confederate forces at Yorktown. Looking back the siege was ill advised in consideration of the delays it caused.
