Land rights are rights that give groups of people custody of the land.
Locke's social contract theory states that people agree to form a government to protect their natural rights to life, liberty, and property. In this contract, individuals give up certain freedoms in exchange for the protection and enforcement of their rights from the government. The government's legitimacy is based on the consent of the governed, and if it fails to protect these rights, people have the right to revolt.

In a real sense, the article does not 'give' anything to the people. All rights belong to the people fundamentally. Rights that are not specifically given to the government are reserved to the people; it is understood that those rights already belong to the people.
The first amendment gives US citizens the rights of free speech, peaceful assembly, etc. They're also called our "Basic Civil Liberties," which give us rights as US citizens. The 14th amendment gave rights to people of slave descent, or people who were former slaves, the rights stated in the 1st amendment.
She helped with Civil Rights. She helped black people get the same rights as white people. She refused to give up her seat on a bus.
The South wanted to count slaves a people but not give them any rights. The North was more for rights, but if no rights, then no count. The government (House of Representatives) is filled by counting people in the State. So the compromise agreed upon fractionally counted Slaves as people with rights. Didn't give slaves any rights, but didn't give the Southern states all the power they wanted.
