Think Titanic.

In England and America, there is a vague sense of a vanished age of elegance and good order in the early years of the 20th Century.

This was undoubtedly a very good time to be born into the middle class. It would qualify you for a lot of privileges, in exchange for certain obligations in keeping up standards of social conduct and business trust.

We now find a lot of escapism in that period, especially in the trappings of the life of people at the top. Actually, letters and memoirs from that time confirm that people at the top felt they had a lot to complain about. Their own gilded age (if any) would have been earlier - for country gentlemen, certainly pre-railways and steam.
