It allowed the astronauts a greater speed and range of movemet and enabled them to carry more gear. In addition it was an experiment to see if they could build a vehicle that would operate in null atmosphere.
A return capsule is a vehicle in which to travel on the return trip from somewhere. For example the first astronauts that walked on the moon used the descent vehicle "Eagle" to land on the Moon and get back to the "Return Capsule" (the Command/Service Module) which took them back to Earth.
The vehicle Armstrong used to reach the moon was the Apollo Eleven spacecraft and the lunar module was called the Eagle after Jules Verne novel FRm the earth to the Moon.
