New York is located on the East Coast of the United States next to the Atlantic Ocean. During Colonial times, as it is today, it had hot, humid summers and very cold winters. New York has hills, plains and mountains. The terrain was swampy near the coast and near the Hudson river. The ground was rocky but the soil nutritional enough for the growing of corn, tobacco, and potatoes.
