By the eighth grade, Barack Obama was attending the prestigious Punahou School in Honolulu, where he was one of the few black students. He was popular, loved sports (especially Basketball) and got good grades. But he was going through a period of time when school was not his most important focus, although he has noted in his writings that English literature (a love he got from his mom, who always encouraged him to read) and History interested him, and later, he became interested in courses related to law and politics.
