The German defeat at Stalingrad on 2 February, 1943 was a great victory for the Soviets and a huge loss for the Germans. They were under-supplied and outnumbered, and the Red Army took advantage of this. They were forced to retreat, but not before taking 815,000 casualties.

Germany had several huge loses in 1943, and basically lost all hope of victory, though, of course, Germany still would not think of surrendering. In February 1943 Germany lost an entire Army Group surrendered at Stalingrad. In May the North Africa campaign ended, with Germany and Italy completely ejected from that continent. Germany had just sent reinforcements at tremendous effort to North Africa, only to see them marched off to the POW compounds. And in July Germany began its last, full-scale offensive of the war, at Kursk on the eastern front, commencing probably the greatest battle in human history. The Soviets were not surprised and had prepared defenses in depth, one line behind another for fifty miles. Once that German offensive was halted the Soviets went over to the offensive themselves, and were never halted by the Germans until they reached Berlin. Also, in the "Battle of the Atlantic" the tide began to turn against the German U-boats in 1943.
