Roman expansion was the result of winning several wars which were fought for different reasons and at different times in history. Expansion was not their purpose It occurred over three centuries. Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul was the first case of deliberate conquest. During the period of rule by emperors Augustus and Claudius sought expansion. Trajan conquered Dacia because the Dacians were raiding the empire and Mesopotamia (Iraq) in one of the many wars with the Persians.
