agriculture.
Well, they both gone a head start on civilization because of good rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia (in fact the name "mesopotamia" means "the land between the rivers") and the Yellow and Yangtse in China. Rivers are the essential first step in civilization because they provide four essentials for lots of people living in a relatively small area: 1) water to drink, 2) water for agriculture, 3) water for transport and 4) water for sewage removal. Besides Mesopotamia and China, rivers birthed Egypt (the Nile), India (the Indus and Ganges) and Rome (the Tiber). The next step is lots of shoreline, either as peninsulas or islands (Italy, Greece, Japan, Britain, Crete, Western Europe).

The development of agriculture was the most important step in the advancement of civilization during the Neolithic Era. It allowed societies to transition from a nomadic lifestyle to settled communities, leading to the growth of population, development of complex social structures, and specialization of labor. Agriculture also laid the foundation for the rise of advanced civilizations by providing a stable food supply.
"Wiel" is an Afrikaans equivalent of "wheel."The wheel may be said to be more or less taken for granted in modern living. But it actually represents an absolutely pivotal step that a civilization must take in order to survive and advance. For some time, the wheel was thought to have been invented in Mesopotamia over 5,000 years ago. But scientists actually have found in their research competing points of origin: in Mesopotamia along with the Balkans, central Europe and the northern Caucasus.
The Mesopotamia civilization built ziggurats and used cuneiform to keep records. The ziggurats were built in the shape of terraced step pyramids and had levels that receded as they went higher.
They were called Ziggurats. Each city in Mesopotamia had one.
