Peter I (the Great) brought a lot of change to Russia. He wanted to westernize his country and make it more modern. He spent time traveling around Europe, observing what other countries were doing differently. Here are a few examples of the things he changed: He made all the men shave their beards. Otherwise, they had to pay tax for having a beard! He made everyone wear western clothes and hold western-style parties. He gained control of the Russian church. He established schools in Moscow. To deal with the nobility, Peter I reorganized the government, Nobles could only advance in the governement if they were loyal to Peter I. To make sure that the Russian Church did not control him, Peter I abolished the position of Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.
