perestroika and glastnost were policies introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev when he came into power during 1985 in USSR. Perestroika means economic restructuring.Gorbachev aims to reduce central govt's power over the economy. He wanted to change SU's command economy into market economy, and allowed the individuals to make their own decisions on the market. He also aimed to reduce spending on military wise and spent on other aspects such as basic necessities. Glasnost means political openess. He allowed media to report on the problems of SU and legalised banned films. He aimed to loosen the control the central govt had over the people and media. He encouraged the civilians to speak out and provide him with ideas on how to govern the country. His policies aimed to help SU develope better but its economy was in such a bad shape from the arms race with USA. Whatever he did is not helping and eventually lead to the downfall of the communist govt. He indirectly lead to the breakdown as he was not supported by neither the communists or anti-communists.
