The plantations in irish history are not like that of the american south, and were not composed of wealthy landowner's with slaves. Rather, they were comprised of protestant scots whom the english had granted the rights to land that they had previously displace irish catholics from, mostly in the north, in an attempt to place Ireland more soundly under british control. This plantation system is a major cause of overcrowding, and subsequent famine that cause the mass migration of many Irish, it is also why several immigrants began calling themselves scotch-irish, to show that they were not Irish Catholics, but rather descendants of the scots that were part of the plantation system of the english
A plantation was when the native Irish were forced out of an area of land and settlers - known as planters -- from Britain were given the land. It was a way of "planting" a British colony in Ireland so they were called Plantations
They have resented the British ever since. However if they knew their history they would know that the Ulster-Scots who were planted there, were in fact in Ireland long before the Irish invaded Ireland in 149AD.
