The French made the Statue of Liberty in honor of America's freedom. The sheets of molded copper and the framework were shipped in pieces to the US and assembled here.

The large sheets of copper are rivetted to the superstructure. The dissimilar metals cause a type of galvanic corrosion. This is what required the major overhaul of the Statue of Liberty a couple of decades ago.
