Looking back through history, you can see where the church (as an organization) impacted government. All sorts of government and/or country leaders answered to church leaders. Look up "Inquisition" on the internet and you'll be shocked at what "government" would do to innocent people in behalf of "The Church" and all in the name of God. The Separation of Powers refers to the power of Government and the power of The Church. America was founded for the pursuit of freedom to pursue ones own religious beliefs... not what the Government sanction Church demanded. Keeping religious beliefs in a tolerant manner is what America's Constitution is all about. Keeping the belief in God but not allowing the Church to dictate procedure and law.
