What was so fabulous about the 1950's?

The 50s were awful. The 1940s had World War II and the 1930s had the Great Depression. These wore fabulous. The 1950s were relatively prosperous and peaceful after the Republicans gained the White House and stopped Truman's War.

As someone who lived through the 1950s, trust me, they were not fabulous. They were very rigid, and very conservative; if you were black, much of America was still segregated, and if you were female, you were not encouraged to go to college or do anything more than marry young and have kids (not that there's anything wrong with that, but it wasn't the right choice for everyone). On the other hand, the 50s was the era when rock and roll was born, and that was a great event for many of us. In a conformist decade, Rock Music was the music of rebellion. There were some great songs and great singers, as well as some fun dances; it was also the era when top-40 radio was on the rise. Yes, television was also becoming very influential, but for young people, we relied on radio so we could hear our favorite songs and listen to our favorite disc jockeys. (TV became a big help too, since a number of variety programs featured the rock stars we loved, like Elvis Presley, whose career began in the mid-1950s.)
