Most of the African Americans slaves worked in the cotton fields where they picked cotton on the plantations. There was always an overseer that watched over the slaves to see if they were working hard enough. If an overseer saw a slave not work, they beat them.

There were house slaves, too. The house slaves did all the housework in their master's house. They cooked, cleaned, dusted, swept, and did all the other chores we do today.

African American slaves performed various tasks, including working in fields to cultivate crops like tobacco, rice, and cotton, as well as working in households doing domestic chores. They also worked in industries such as mining, construction, and manufacturing. Many slaves were forced to work long hours under harsh conditions, with little to no pay.
