Panama was part of Colombia. Then in 1903 the U.S and Colombia signed the Hay-Herran Treaty to finish the Panama Canal, which the french did not complete. But the Colombian government rejected the treaty. So the Panamanians were highly upset and the chose to separate from Colombia.
