Panama was part of Colombia. Then in 1903 the U.S and Colombia signed the Hay-Herran Treaty to finish the Panama Canal, which the french did not complete. But the Colombian government rejected the treaty. So the Panamanians were highly upset and the chose to separate from Colombia.
By 1903, the Panamanians had staged 53 revolts over a 55 year period under the rule of Colombia. When the Hay-Herran' Treaty was rejected by the Colombian government, they staged another revolt.
