Prince Siddhartha rode with Channa, his charioteer and saw an old man whose head was white and his body was withered - every living being will become old like him. Next time the Prince saw a sick man, thin and weak and scorched by fever - if health be frail as that who then can take delight in pleasure. Next time the Prince met a funeral procession with a dead body on the bier - death is inevitable and comes to all. The forth time the Prince met a calm and dignified hermit, a religious man who has abandoned all worldly pleasures and has found peace.

There were 564. The whole story goes something like this:
The Buddha was Gautama Siddhartha. He was born as an Indian prince and everyone wanted him to be a great ruler so they kept him shielded from life. However, when he was on an unavoidable trip, he saw three shocking sufferings. He saw a horribly ill man. He saw an old man with all of the maladies we see the elderly having. And he saw a corpse. This frightened him and he set out to try and decide how to avoid these sufferings, and eventually created Buddhism.

Why was it important for the Buddha to find the meaning of life?

The Buddha saw that no matter how wonderful the experience of this life could be, relative happiness would never last. This is the nature of all relative things - impermanence. The Buddha strove to understand what was permanent or absolute, and thus, by definition, able to provide true happiness and freedom from suffering.

Where did the Buddha first teach his new insights?

Buddha didn't teach really much. People that saw him and heard his stories and what he believes wrote down the things they heard and people started taking his stories and beliefs as a way of life. The buddha was just a symbol of the religion.

How would you compare Buddha and Mohammed?

Buddha saw the world as it is. Mohammed saw the world as he wished it to be. Jesus saw mankind as he would wish it to be. I can't believe that any of them really had a clue about the afterlife.
