At the time people in East Germany were so tired of being behind the wall people started a mass exodus. A loop call the "Berlin Loop" was a place where Easterners could still go into Western Germany. Millions of people, especially the younger generations, left via this route to be free of the oppressive regime of the Soviets. The wall was built to control the flow of people out of the city.
