Maximum John was a (Big Gun) with a difference. He was a specially designed coastal defense rifle (Long range) and was believed to be of from l8 to 20 Inches in caliber, larger in caliber than any normal Naval gun including the Yamato Battleship class l8 Inch cannons. Maximum, obviiously(loading was performed by an auxiliary crane!) b ut why John? Easy, the outsized Cannon was permanently emplaced at Fort Hancock, surely youare familiar with the (Longhanded) Revolutionary signer! John Hancock, Fort Hancock-hence, maximum John! The sobriquet was also applied-no direct connection to the late Judge John Yengo, a tough-on-crime type, Maximum John was a cannon before it was a Judge!
