Haiti was originally called Ayiti or (Land of high mountains) by the indigenous Tainos that occupied that island before its alleged 'discovery'. It was renamed Espanola or Hispanola after Spain colonized it. It is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Haïti, which means "mountainous land," was the name used by the Taino Arawaks, and they also called some part of it Bohio, which means "rich villages." Kiskeya is also another term attributed to the island by the Taïno/Arawaks.
