In the period just before the changes made by Henry VIII, leading to the Church of England, the invention of printing meant that The Bible was potentially available to more and people, and people were reading it, and trying to put Jesus' message into action.

However, not everyone had access to a Bible in their own language, and of course, not everyone could read. It was, indeed, a minority movement. But there was ferment and activity because of the growing Reformation movement, and lots of preaching, so that even illiterate people could hear the message of the Bible in their own language.

In addition, the older Catholic style piety was followed by many people. Here devotion to God could be expressed in making lifetime commitments to God, living as a monk or nun, or as a member of one of the other religious orders. For others who did not make this type of commitment, there was the ordinary participation in the life of the Church, through the sacraments (mainly the Mass, or Holy Communion). The level of participation would have varied from person to person.
