France was the primary ally, and the helped by laoning huge sums of money, and selling the Patriot cause cannons, muskets, powder, shot and a variety of other goods. After the Treaty of Anmity and Commerce, in 1778, they also became directly involved, sending a fleet and numerous ground forces to fight alongside the Patriots.
