You can imagine how dismal the Great Depression was:
Many people lost their jobs and businesses soon began to slow down because they didn't have any money.
Banks closed and factories closed. Pretty soon, most people were homeless. Some had to wear poor clothing and shoes.
Even the government didn't have any money to help.
But money wasn't the only problem; there was a large dust storm happening.
The storm destroyed areas of land. It even destroyed crops onfarms.
As a result, the land was dry.
Overall, the Great Depression was gloomy and heartbreaking to familes.
That's why it is called "the depression," because it was the biggest time of great financial hardship in the recent past. "The Great Depression" and "The Depression" are the same thing. Although, some people talk about us entering "a depression" sometimes, and they are talking about the economy now, not back then.
