The tyrant was charged by a majority of the people to restrict the power of the aristocratic oligarchs who exploited the middle and lower classes, and to lift the living standards of the latter. The problem was that the aristocrats were determined to end this restriction on their power and wealth, so the tyrant had to surround himself with a large bodyguard, and to pay them, levy a tax. Greeks hated taxes, and after a couple of generations forgot how bad things had been under the oligarchs and expelled the tyrants.

What is the difference between a tyrant government of today versus a tyrant government of ancient Greece?

An ancient Greek tyrant was appointed by the majority of middle and lower class citizens to break the power of exploiting aristocratic oligarchs and rule for the benefit of all. A tyrant today generally seizes power for the benefit of himself and his followers and exploits the community for his own benefit. So the ancient tyrant spread benefits from a few to the many, the modern tyrant takes benefits from the many for the use of the few.

What is the opposite of a tyrant?

An antonym for tyrant is "Autarch" from the Greek Autarkhos, meaning "self-governing". Autarchism is a political philosophy that upholds the principle of individual sovereignty (liberty), rejects compulsory government (rule by others), and supports the elimination of government rule in favor of ruling yourself and no other. Advocates of this philosophy are autarchists and a society in which everyone rules themselves and no one else is autarchy.
