It was a radical change in the organisation of manufacturing industry. It started in England in the 18th century because in England there was peace, they had coal and iron ore, they had capital, and a well-developed agriculture which could freed workers from the land and made it possible to provide food for a large number of workers in the towns. It all started in the textile industry and with a lot of inventions. The most important inventions were the steam engine, the internal combustion engine and later the electricity. Instead of manufactures factories were opened, and the production of relatively small quantities of products was replaced by mass production.

Good answer, short and to the point. Would add, however, that there was a developing market for these mass produced goods.
