The so-called Mormon Battalion was a regiment of soldiers entirely composed of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often called Mormons). Although comprised primarily of men, there were several women and some children that were allowed to march with the Battalion and who assisted with cooking and laundry.
In seeking assistance from the federal government in their migration to the Rocky Mountains, President James K. Polk agreed to provide funds for the church if they would in turn volunteer to help the United States in their fight against Mexico. Consequently, the Battalion was organized in July of 1846.
The march of the Battalion would take them across the southwestern portions of what would become the border between the United States and Mexico, and helped establish a trail that would become one of the primary routes west for many settlers. It is also notable as the longest march by any American unit in war time without having suffered a single casualty of war.
Battalion would become instrumental in building up the settlements of San Diego, Los Angeles, and other communities throughout California. Members of the Battalion were also present at Sutter's Mill when gold was discovered, ushering in the Gold Rush.
The Battalion mustered out officially in Los Angeles in July of 1847, and the remaining members of that unit made their way into the Utah territory to be reunited with their families and the main body of the church.

No, the Mormon Battalion only existed for one year, from July 1846 to July 1847. It was a volunteer unit of the US military during the Mexican-American War, so called because it was made entirely of Mormons. While there are thousands of Mormons in the military today, they are integrated into mixed units rather than separated into their own, so there is no Mormon Battalion.
