Morse Code provides a letter-based method of communication by means of any type of signal that can be switched on and off ... light, sound, etc. As such, it can accomodate messages in any language that uses the familiar Roman (English) alphabet. While using the simplest possible transmitting and receiving equipment, it is highly immune to noise, and can succeed over very noisy 'channels'.

When Radio was very new and the Army needed to contact other parts of the Army during a battle they did use a system invented by Thomas Morse to communicate. This meant that orders could be sent to various units faster than a soldier could run there and run back. The best remembered form of Morse Code was and still is 'dit dit dit dar dar dar dit dit dit' or in human speak - Save Our Souls/ SOS/ Internationaly Recognised Emergency Signal. It was also very easy to remember.

I presume you mean a 'Morse Key'.

It is a hand operated switch, that rocks and allows the long and short bursts of electricity, required to send Morse code.

It is still used by amateur radio hams on top band. It was used until recently, for sending long distance messages form ships to shore.
