Touch of Grey. Prior to it's release The Grateful Dead were playing concert venues at College Campus Theatres so small that graduations couldn't be held at the venue.

Contrary to Grateful Dead Merchandising, In the 1960's they were a bad band opening for Janis Joplin.

Technically, the Grateful Dead are a TWO hit wonder band. A "hit" is considered any song that reaches the top 40 in Billboard, and Truckin' hit #37 in 1970.

The Grateful Dead only had ONE top ten Billboard Hot 100 hit. Touch of Grey. It was played a total of 195 times between 9/15/82 and 12/9/93. It was released on album in 1987 on In The Dark. This album would also be the only Dead album to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200 Album Chart. It became a pop hit and ironically is usually considered the least favorite among the Deadheads because it was so commercial. The Dead preferred live albums and show recording over studio albums. Even though the Dead was financially one of the most successful band, they did not like the commercial aspect of the music business and their tremendous success really stemmed from all the live shows and live recordings.
