There is no single battleground in Normandy. Instead there were a series of scattered actions along a sixty mile front has been called (1) the Invasion of Hitler's Atlantic Wall (2) Operation Overlord or (3) the campaign for Normandy. From the beaches, Omaha and Utah for the Americans the invasion moved inland with series of battles to secure bridges, hills or rail and transportation crossroads which became bogged down by the hedgerows covering the Norman countryside, each of which made a formidable defensive position for the Germans. Then came Operation Cobra which was an armored end run around the German left or west flank preceded by saturation or carpet bombing all along the front.
The "Breakout" effectively ended the campaign in Normandy.
